rural property in wales
Being a Governess in Rural/outback Australia- teaching and living?

-waves- Hi! I’ve recently responded to an ad for a Governess in an ‘outback’ (rural) property in north west (emphasise the west) new south wales. What I’m looking for isn’t ‘what is a governess’ (I’d be stupid if I applied for something I had no clue about) so much as advice for living out there (nearest town is only 100km’s away, but still). I’ve lived in Rural Areas before plenty and don’t have a problem with not going into town too often, etc. I just want advice in general- maybe some suggestions of what to take, clothing , etc. I have a fair idea in most cases, but extra opinions would be great.

cheers.
Maybe some suggestions of things to do beforehand, questions to ask the employers, that kind of thing. The girl is 6, btw.

It depends on how far west in New South Wales you are going. The further west you go the more desert country you will find. The further east you head the more likely you will find grasslands and larger sheep or grain properties. The further inland you go the colder it will be at night and it can be quite hot during the day. It is not unusual to have frosts at night and a ground too hot to walk on barefooted in the heat of the day. I would advise to take both types of clothing just in case. Lighter clothing for the day and something warm to rug up with at night.
Outback stations can also be dry and dusty. It depends very much on what your employer expects, but certainly Jeans would be considered pretty normal for outdoor activies or something that wears well. You probably might want them to send some pictures of the property so you can guage what kind of climate is there (or just ask them what would be appropriate). Remember also that Stations have a lot of Jackaroos (ranchhands) about and you may want to consider the lever of modesty needed. Some of these guys either see to much of the night life (pubs and bars) or not nearly enough. It doesn’t mean you dress like a nun but do be aware that the outback can be a fairly macho place (for both men and women) and some guys can be real charmers.

You definitely want good shoes. At least one pair of strong boots, desert boots or something fairly confortable thats also hard wearing.
If they have an internet connection (usually via satellite), you might want to ask if you can bring a laptop computer. Having communication with the outside world will be a godsend. The outback can be a pretty lonely place at times. You could at least have access to educational resources at your fingertips for when you need it.
