England’s Newest City: Preston
Situated on the north bank of the River Ribble, Preston is an unparished area and urban settlement that forms part of the City of Preston. PR1 is one of the main areas of the City of Preston that attract home buyers for many reasons. In this area, the average price of a three bedroom house sits around 160,000 pounds. With a population of over 114,000, Preston holds the overwhelming majority of people in the City of Preston, whose population stands at 132,000.
The premier landmark in Preston is St Walburge’s Church, which features the tallest spire on any church in England that is not a cathedral at a truly impressive 94 metres. Other notable buildings in Preston include the Harris Museum, the Town Hall, the Miller Arcade, the former Corn Exchange and Public Hall, Fishersgate Baptist Church and St Wilfrid’s Catholic Church. On Winckley Square there are many stunning buildings which originated in the Georgian era.
Preston hosts a number of annual events that show the range of its cultural diversity, including the Caribbean Carnival which brings music, dance and colour to Preston’s Avenham and Miller Parks every summer. Also notable is the Preston Mela which is an event which celebrates South Asian culture, heritage, art and food with two stages of live music and dance.
Over two thirds of Preston is classed as a Rural Area, even though it is a university city, since it is home to the University of Central Lancashire. Currently the sixth biggest university in the country with over 33,000 students in attendance, this university used to be known as The Harris Institute, Preston Polytechnic, and more recently as Lancashire Polytechnic.
Preston is also reputable for its Food and Drink, with local specialties such as traditional handmade farmhouse cheeses at Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses, culinary herbs and products at eh Culinary Herb Centre, fresh farm eggs at Duckett’s Farm, home bred beef and lamb at Park Gate, jams and preserves at Pennine Way Preserves and Susan’s Farmhouse Fudge, a family run business that produce quality homemade fudge.
A great place to shop, Preston has a variety of independent gift shops, salons, jewelers and boutiques to snoop around, and as well as shopping malls also boasts traditional indoor and outdoor markets. Preston also offers a range of cafes, pubs, bars and inns for those who wish to take a break from shopping.
The greener side of the city can be seen on country escapes along with the greener side of the city. Beacon Fell Country Park with its sculpture trail and City Oasis Avenham and Miller Parks can form parts of an ideal family day out.
Notable famous people who come from Preston include Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park, Star Wars R2D2 actor Kenny Baker and Radio One DJ and music journalist Mary Ann Hobbs.
