Kakadu National Park – Outback Australia
Australia’s Northern Territory is home to two World Heritage-listed national parks, the largest of these is Kakadu. Rich in cultural and natural beauty and just 3 hours drive from Darwin on sealed roads, the park is accessible to all and easy to fit into even the shortest stays in the Top End. This amazing park is 20,000 square kms, so staying few days will only allow you to explore a small part of the park.
A number of Aboriginal clans with different languages and different traditions make up the Traditional Owners of the Kakadu region. Today the park is managed jointly by the Traditional Owners and the Director of National Parks to ensure there is balance between tourism and cultural requirements. One of the best places to get an introduction to the local Aboriginal culture is at the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where displays and exhibits explain traditional ways including hunting, cooking, ceremonies and laws. There are over 5000 sites for aboriginal rock art currently known in Kakadu, making it the world’s richest area. Home to a spectacular display of rock art, Ubirr also provides stunning views over the park and into Arnhem Land – it is located in the East Alligator region. Animals, food and spiritual beings are all painted on the rocks and overhangs as a mark of respect or as a way of passing stories and traditions through to younger generations.
Wildlife and natural rugged beauty abound in Kakadu – one of Australia’s most stunning places. Explore the billabongs, floodplains, Savannah woodlands, tidal flats and monsoon forests of this remarkably diverse landscape. Whether you want to walk the extensive trails, drive (both 2wd and 4wd), fly or cruise around Kakadu there are plenty of ways to explore the park. A sunset or sunrise cruise on the Yellow Water wetlands; a trip to the amazing Jim Jim and Twin Falls (accessible in Dry season only by 4wd or by air in the Wet season); or a stop at Gunlorn Waterfall Creek with its plunge pool and waterfall, and incidentally where they filmed parts of Crocodile Dundee, would all be must-see experiences in Kakadu.
Kakadu is divided into seven main areas, each with their own areas of interest and accommodation options. Jabiru is the main township in Kakadu and offers a full range of services and places to stay from bush camping to hotel accommodation. Camping or van sites are available across all the regions with some regions, like Yellow Water, offering motel-style rooms as well. May to August offers visitors good weather but also good flows at the all waterfalls and is the most popular time of year to visit the park. Whilst some parts of the park are inaccessible by road and the temperatures get extremely hot in the Wet season, it can still be a spectacular time to visit.
