Excerpt: Delaware River – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The main, west or Mohawk branch rises in Schoharie County, New York, about 1,886 feet (575 m) above the sea, near Mount Jefferson, and flows tortuously through the plateau in a deep trough, impounded at one point to create the Cannonsville Reservoir, and then becoming the state boundary of N.Y and Pennsylvania at the 42nd parallel, until it emerges from the Catskills. Similarly, the East Branch begins from a small pond south of Grand Gorge in the town of Roxbury in Delaware County, flowing southward toward its impoundment by New York City to create the Pepacton Reservoir, the largest reservoir in the New York City water supply system. The confluence is just south of Hancock. Delaware above Walpack Bend, where it leaves the buried valley eroded from Marcellus Shale bedrockFrom Hancock, NY the river flows between the Pocono plateau and the raised shale beds south of the Catskills. The river flows down a broad Appalachian valley, passing Hawk’s Nest overlook on the “Upper Delaware Scenic Byway”. At Port Jervis it enters the Port Jervis trough. Below Port Jervis, New York, the Walpack Ridge deflects the Delaware into the Minisink Valley, where it follows the southwest strike of the eroded Marcellus Formation beds along the PennsylvaniaNew Jersey state line for 25 miles (40 km) to the end of the ridge at Wallpack Bend in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Minisink is a buried valley where the Delaware flows in a bed of glacial till that buried the eroded bedrock during the last glacial period. It then skirts the Kittatinny ridge, which it crosses at the Delaware Water Gap, between nearly vertical walls of limestone, and passes through a quiet and charming country of farm and forest… More:

The power station was brought online on March 20 1969, and is supplied with coal by the adjacent open cut mine , transported to the power station along a 3 kilometre long private road. Overburden is stripped and backfilled into the mined area by earthmoving contractors using conventional power shovels and trucks. From 1955 test bores for coal were made at Anglesea by the Roche Brothers, who were then operating a mine at nearby Wensleydale where the coal reserves were dwindling. An extensive coal deposit was found two kilometres to the north of the Anglesea township, with mining commencing in 1959 to supply brown coal to industry and

Chapters: Walkerton Tragedy, 1979 Mississauga Train Derailment, Op Canopy, Old Mill, Great Toronto Fire, 1900 Hull-ottawa Fire, Hambly Arena, St. Pius X High School Shooting. Excerpt: The Walkerton Tragedy is a series of events that accompanied the contamination of the water supply of Walkerton, Ontario, Canada, by E. coli bacteria in May 2000. Walkerton is a community in Ontario. The water supply for the town of Walkerton was operated by the Walkerton Public Utilities Commission, with Stan Koebel as manager and Frank Koebel as water foreman. Neither had any formal training in their position, retaining their jobs through three decades of on-the-job experience. The water supply became contaminated with the highly dangerous O157:H7 strain of E. coli bacteria, from farm runoff into an adjacent well that was known for years to be vulnerable to contamination. Starting May 15, 2000, many residents of the town of about 5,000 began to simultaneously experience bloody diarrhea, gastrointestinal infections and other symptoms of E. coli infection. For days the Walkerton Public Utilities Commission insisted the water supply was “OK” despite being in possession of laboratory tests that had found evidence of contamination. On May 21, an escalation in the number of patients with similar symptoms finally spurred the region’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Murray McQuigge, to issue a boil water advisory, warning residents not to drink the water. At least seven people died directly from drinking the E. coli contaminated water, who might have been saved if the Walkerton Public Utilities Commission had admitted to contaminated water sooner, and about 2,500 became ill. The CBC news noted: Premier Harris immediately blamed the former NDP government for loosening water sta… More:

Excerpt: Eldoret – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In 1908, fifty eight families of Afrikaans-speaking South Africans settlers “trekked” to the Uashin Gishu plateau from Nakuru after a journey from South Africa by sea and by rail from Mombasa. They were followed by sixty more families in 1911 and more later. Eldoret was established in the midst of the farms they created. The official town site of Eldoret itself started in 1910 with a Post Office on what was known to the white settlers as “Farm 64″, “64″ or “Sisibo” to the locals because, at that time it was 64 miles from the newly built Uganda Railway railhead at Kibigori. Willy van Aardt owned the farm. The Central Lounge in Eldoret is all that remains of Willy’s farm. When the governor decided to establish an administrative centre, the Post Office was renamed from “64″ with the official town name as “Eldoret” in 1912. Becoming an administrative centre caused an enormous increase in trade within the prospective city. A bank and several shops were built. The Uganda Railway extension, from Kibigori toward Uganda, reached Eldoret in 1924, starting a new era of prosperity and growth. In 1928, a piped water supply from the Sosiani River was installed. In 1933, the East African Power and Lighting Company installed an electricity generator plant. By that time, Eldoret had a small airport, and low-rental housing had been constructed. Daniel arap Moi was born in the neighbouring Baringo District, and under his presidency, the town was developed further. In 1984, Moi University was established by the g… More:

Chapters: Ghost Towns in Kentucky, Scuffletown, Kentucky, Paradise, Kentucky, Creelsboro, Kentucky, Corn Island, Shippingport, Kentucky, Bryan Station, Boone Station, Blue Heron, Kentucky, Fudge, Kentucky. Excerpt: Scuffletown is a ghost town in Henderson County in the western part of the U.S. state of Kentucky. Located on the Ohio River just above the mouth of Green River, it was a city for barely 100 years but is legendary in the area because of activities there during the American Civil War and its rough reputation. Scuffletown Bottoms, as it is called now, is on the Kentucky-Indiana border almost directly across the Ohio River from Newburgh. Scuffletown got its start in 1800 when Jonathan Thomas Stott-(Scott)-(Fox)he was Full Blood Shawnee. He married Mary Polly Cooper a full blood Cherokee. They had two sons Jonathan Stott and Thomas Scott. During the Cherokee removal their father was shot and died in Shawneetown, Illinois 1838. He ran a tavern in the area that passing river traffic could easily access. Scuffletown got its name from the flatboat people coming down the Ohio River. The Cherokee played stick ball and had wrestling matches right out side the tavern/trading post. The white people saw this as scuffling. According to the Annals and Scandals of Henderson County by Maralea Arnett, “Since he kept a good supply of liquor, it became a rendezvous for flatboatmen and others on the river. Often a general fight developed after several hours of drinking and the place received the name of Scuffletown.” A school was built there sometime around 1817. The first church was built in 1830 at the Vanada farm. A tobacco stemmery was built in 1860 and shipped 400 to 450 hogsheads per year to Europe. A steam gristmill and blacksmith shop soon followed. Initial reports suggested that the outbreak had started in February due to farming practices at a pig farm half-owned by Smithfield Foods . Smithfield Foods stated that it had found no clinical signs or symptoms of the presence of swine influenza in the company’s swine herd, or among its employees at its joint ventures in Mexico, that it routinely administers influenza virus vaccination to their swine herds and that it conducts monthly testing for the presence of swine influenza. The new strain was identified as a combination of several different strains of Influenzavirus A , subtype H1N1 , including separate strains of this subtype circulating in humans and in pigs. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have expressed serious concerns that the new strain, which transmits between humans and has had a relatively high mortality rate in the possible and confirmed Mexican cases, has the potential to become an influenza pandemic . It is reported that, because the virus is already widespread, containment will be impossible. As of 27

The design precedent for the Robie House was the Ferdinand F. Tomek House in Riverside, Illinois, designed by Wright in 1907-08. At the time that he commissioned Wright to design his home, Robie was only 28 years old and the assistant manager of the Exclesior Supply Company, a company on the South Side of Chicago owned and managed by his father. Although later drawings of the Robie House show a date of 1906, Wright could not have started the design for the building earlier than the spring of 1908 because Robie had actually purchased the property only in May of that year. Not illustrated. Excerpt: George Washington’s Gristmill – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia George Washington inherited Mount Vernon in 1754. In 1771, Washington erected a large stone gristmill on the plantation to replace a mill his father had built in the 1730s. The new mill was located three miles west of Mount Vernon on Dogue Run Creek. It was used to produce flour and cornmeal for the plantation as well as high quality flour for export to the West Indies, England, and continental Europe. Washington also built a house for the miller at the site as well as a cooperage to supply barrels for the mill, and later, the distillery operation. The mill was powered by a large water wheel. To ensure a steady power supply, water was diverted from Piney Branch into Dogue Run Creek above the mill’s headrace. The additional water flow significantly increased the mills production capacity. In 1791, Washington automated his mill using technology developed and patented by Oliver Evans of Delaware. Evans was personally acquainted with the mill and had repaired some of its works. Once the gristmill was well established, Washingtons farm manager, James Anderson, suggested building a whiskey distillery adjacent to the mill. When it was completed in 1797, the distillery was the largest in America. By 1799, it had become one of Washingtons most successful enterprises, producing 11,000 gallons of whiskey per year. A variety of whiskey was produced at the site along with brandy and vinegar. The most common whiskey recipe used 60% rye, 35% corn, and 5% malted barley. Smaller … More:
