Chapters: Holt Manufacturing Company, Girdap, Tobin Arms, Maxwell Automobile, Molson Bank, Cox-Klemin, Huffman Bros. Motor Co, Brødrene Hals. Excerpt: The Holt Manufacturing Company, founded in 1892 in Stockton, California, United States was the first company to successfully manufacture a crawling-type tread tractor. Its president Benjamin Holt was credited with patenting the first workable design. When the tractor was tested on November 27, 1904, a photographer for the company is recorded as having described the motion of the tracks “like that of a caterpillar”, although some sources attribute this name to British soldiers in July 1907. In 1909, the company purchased a bankrupt company’s factory in Peoria, Illinois and began manufacturing Holt’s design there. The new company grew quickly. Holt named it the Holt Caterpillar Company, although he did not trademark the name Caterpillar until 1911. The company’s initial products focused on agricultural machinery and were distributed internationally. During World War I, almost all of its production capacity was dedicated to military needs. Its tractors replaced horses and were widely used by the Allies as artillery tractors and for hauling supplies. British General Ernest Swinton recognized in the Holt tractor the potential for a power-driven, bullet-proof, tracked vehicle that could destroy enemy machine guns, although the British later chose an English firm to build the first tanks. Holt’s equipment was credited with helping to win the war and its tractor was regarded as “one of the most important military vehicles of all time.” The Holt Manufacturing Company gained worldwide recognition for the quality and durability of its equipment. As the war ended, the Holt company was left with huge surplus inven… More: |

Economic History Of The Confederate States Of America $9.8 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Confederate States of America had an agrarian-based economy that relied heavily on slave-worked plantations for the production of cotton for export to Europe and the northern US states. If ranked as an independent nation, it would have been the fourth richest country of the world in 1860. When the Union blockaded its ports in summer 1861, exports of cotton fell 95 percent and the South had to restructure itself to emphasize food production and munitions production. After losing control of its main rivers and ports, it had to depend on a rickety railroad system that, with few repairs, no new equipment and federal raids, crumbled away. The financial infrastructure collapsed during the war as inflation destroyed banks and forced a move toward a barter economy for civilians. The government seized needed supplies and livestock (paying with certificates that were supposed to be paid off after the war, but never were.) By 1865 the economy was in ruins. The main agricultural products of the Confederate States were cotton, tobacco, and sugar cane, with some cattle and much grain. In 1862, there was a severe drought that, despite efforts to switch from cotton planting to grain farming, caused food shortages and even bread riots in the winter of 1862 and spring of 1863. The harvests in the Confederate States were fairly abundant after 1862, but often went to waste as they could not be harvested or moved to markets. Corn was raised in large quantities, and, in general, the raising of food products instead of tobacco and cotton was encouraged by legislation and otherwise. The scarcity of food in the armies and cities was due mostly to the shortage of male labor caused by conscription, the disruption of transportation and finance, and the fact that im… More: |

Indiana State Forests $7.89 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Clark State Forest, Morgan-Monroe State Forest, Yellowwood State Forest, Harrison-Crawford State Forest, List of Indiana State Forests, Martin State Forest, Ferdinand State Forest. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Clark State Forest – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A concern around the turn of the twentieth century was that many woodworking facilities in Indiana would be forced to close due to dwindling timber supplies. This wood was used by furniture makers and shipbuilders such as the Howard Shipyards. The timber industry was a major part of southern Indiana’s agricultural income, but thousands of acres had been deforested. In response to the problem, the state of Indiana decided to establish a series of state forests to ensure the continued existence of timber for woodworking facilities, and to allow Indiana to maintain its ability to export hardwood. The Indiana General Assembly in 1901 created the Indiana State Board of Forestry. |

It is located near the village of Sumarokovo in Krasnoselsky District of Kostroma Oblast, some 25 km east of the city of Kostroma. As early as 1869, the Russian zoologist and explorer Alexander von Middendorff wrote to the Tsar’s Government: These young moose won’t forget the way to the winter camp, because this is where the daily meals of steamed oats are served. (Courtesy of Dr. Minaev)The idea of the moose domestication did not get much traction in Czarist Russia. However, it reappeared in the 1930s Soviet Union; it was suggested at the time that moose cavalry could be efficiently used even in the deep snow. In 1934, the Soviet Government’s Nature Reserve Committee ordered creation of moose reserves (zapovedniks) and moose breeding centers ( ). Experimental work, initiated by Petr Alexandrovich Manteufel ( ), took place at a number of locations: in Yakutia, at the Serpukhov Experimental Game Farm, and in the Buzuluksy Bor Nature Reserve ( ) in Orenburg Region. However, the work was not finished in time for the World War II, and when the war came, the entire idea of cavalry as a combat force was swept away. After the war, the idea of domesticating the moose was pursued again, with the focus on agricultural use. It was thought that the moose, whose very name means tw… More: |

In the 1930s Spain became a focus for pacifist organizations including the Fellowship of Reconciliation and the War Resisters’ International whose president was the British MP and Labour Party leader George Lansbury. Prominent Spanish pacifists such as Amparo Poch y Gascón and José Brocca supported the Republicans. Brocca argued that Spanish pacifists had no alternative but to make a stand against fascism. He put this stand into practice by various means including organising agricultural workers to maintain food supplies and through humanitarian work with war refugees. |
